The Hawaiian team surfed, socialized, and ate delicious lunches on the veranda overlooking the sea. The islanders always found themselves surrounded by eager questioners who wanted to know about surfing and canoe paddling in the Hawaiian Islands, where both were year-round activities. (Surfing was only a summer sport in Lima, as the winters were cold and gloomy, with little sun.)

Club Waikiki was a special gathering place not just for surfing but also for playing squash, working out, and taking long lunches with pisco sours. Afterward, members went home for a siesta before returning to work around four. Most men worked until eight at night and dined between ten and eleven. Elegant late-night parties were held at the Club Waikiki, as well as at country clubs, restaurants, and nightclubs in Lima. The team listened to bands playing cha-cha, merengue, and tango music and danced into the early morning.
